The top 10 tech stories of 2011

Whew! Good ol' 2011 is almost over and that means that we're gonna take a little break from tech news and relax until the spring.

Just kidding! What the end of the year really means is that we're getting a bit sentimental and reviewing the top tech stories of the last 365 days. Here are the 10 which stood out to us, in no particular order.

Apple

The landing page of the official Apple website, as it was for weeks after the death of Steve Jobs.

The death of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs
When Apple co-founder Steve Jobs?died on Oct. 5, at age 56, the loss resonated?throughout the tech world?in?unprecedented ways.?He was described as?our generation's Thomas Edison?and his legacy was celebrated accordingly.

The Internet mourned the passing of the man with over?2.5 million tweets?in the twelve hours following his death. People around the world sent?over one million emails?filled with wishes, memories and words of sympathy to an address set up by Apple.

Samsung and Google, some of the company's competitors, delayed the release of new products out of respect for the loss of the man who launched Apple.

As his eponymous biography by Walter Isaacson hit the shelves, we?dissected everything about Jobs from minutia ??such as his?final words, eating habits, reading list, workaholic nature?and?old pranks???to grand concepts such as?his life's work. (It is worth noting that the Jobs biography became Amazon's best-selling book of 2011?and?Sony Pictures is said to be working on a movie version.)?

Lulzsec (R) and Anonymous (L)

Pictured are the logos used by hacking groups Lulzsec (R) and Anonymous (L).

The trouble stirred up by Anonymous and Lulzsec
What's any year without a couple of big security scares? In 2011, hacking groups Anonymous and Lulzsec were two entities that struck fear in a lot of network administrators' hearts.

Between the two groups?? who even teamed up at one point???there was a great deal of trouble stirred up.

Lulzsec, a mysterious and loosely knit organization, took out (or at least claimed credit for affecting)?multiple gaming websites,?an?FBI website,?a porn site,?a?Senate website, a CIA website, Rupert Murdoch's Sun newspaper website?and more. The fun was over once the group's key member and spokesperson?? a fellow who goes by the name "Topiary"?? was nabbed by authorities in the U.K.

Anonymous on the other hand didn't suffer any similarly large casualties or stumbling points while taking credit for?sharing thousands of military email addresses, taking down a tourist-oriented website in Orlando, Florida, hacking an FBI partner site, snatching files from servers belonging to large U.S.-based companies, conducting a DDoS attack on MasterCard, as well as some miscellaneous mischievous deeds.

Now?this all may sound?somewhat funny, but you should probably keep in mind that the individuals responsible for these events are heralding a world of heightened security and constant threats.

The many headaches suffered by RIM
This year made me want to hug Research in Motion's troubled executives. The folks over there just couldn't catch a break as one of the company's shiny new gadgets?? the BlackBerry Playbook?? got slammed in reviews, its share of the U.S. smartphone market shrunk?and its freshly launched music-sharing service was ridiculed.

And as if that's not enough, the company's sites were hacked after it offered to cooperate with U.K. authorities in order to research what?? if any?? role the BlackBerry Messenger service might've played in inciting riots in early August.

But hey, at least the company managed to squeak by with a decent quarter?(if you ignore millions of dollars worth of unsold BlackBerry Playbook tablets, that is).

An Egyptian man, holding up a sign praising the social network Facebook, joins others in Cairo's Tahrir Square on Feb. 1.

How the Internet helped bring down a dictator
As much trouble as the Internet ??or rather, social media ??can cause, it can also do quite a bit of good at times. In 2011, we saw a great example of this phenomenon as?the Internet and social media played a pivotal role in a revolution.

What happened? Well, on Jan. 27, right before the Egyptian government pulled the plug on the country's Internetin order to quiet protestor activity, there was a great deal of traffic coming to social networks, Facebook in particular. What better place to get organized?than Mark Zuckerberg's playground, after all?

You'd think that the whole business of shutting down the Internet would've eliminated social media and the like from the big fight against the 30-year government of Hosni Mubarak, but Egyptians kept in touch with the outside world using a series of workarounds.

Anyway, long story short: When the Internet switch was flipped back on, Egyptian's were celebrating the end of Mubarak's rule and social media was praised for aiding a revolution.

Netflix

Netflix and its wacky business moves
A recent consumer study revealed that the satisfaction levels of Netflix customers have dropped?significantly and?? unless you've been sleeping under a rock with no Wi-Fi connection?? you shouldn't be surprised by that.

After all, the company alienated and angered a lot of folks when it announced that it would?no longer be offering a combined DVD and streaming plan and?would instead separate the services, for a minimum cost of about $16 a month if you still want both.

And as if people weren't riled up enough over that?? and boy, were they riled up!?? Netflix announced that it would split itself into two separate businesses, video-streaming company Netflix and DVD rental company Qwikster. No one truly understood?where that particular idea came from or why the heck Netflix didn't secure the @Qwikster Twitter username before announcing its plans.

None of that matters anymore though, because Netflix made our heads spin all the way around again by canceling the whole plan to split into two.

Apple

The release of the iPhone 5, er, 4S
Every year since 2007 has brought us a shiny new smartphone from Apple and 2011 was no different. The year marked the introduction of the iPhone 4S?? yes, it really wasn't called the iPhone 5?? and its built-in voice-activated personal assistant Siri.

After months of wildly inaccurate speculation?and a keynote sans Mr. Jobs, we stood in lines, whined about little technical hiccups, and found silly things to giggle over as soon as the device was released.

It's worth noting that the hardware?? the actual iPhone 4S itself?? wasn't really the big star this year. Instead iOS 5, the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system, made us swoon with all its new features.?

Google

The launch of Google+
There's no such thing as too many social networking services, right?

Well, at least Google didn't think so when it launched something called Google+.

The service?? which is finally open to everyone after a long period of being invitation-only?? is now unavoidable. It's?integrated into our Gmail accounts, has the obligatory mobile apps, keeps us busy with privacy issues that we can debate?and has some confusing labels that we still haven't entirely figured out. (What do you call adding a friend on Google+? I still maintain that "plussing" someone sounds slightly dirty.)

It's worth noting that despite the fact that Google+ is so darn difficult to avoid, interest in the social network appears to be waning?after initially rocketing when the service opened its doors to the general public.?

Google

Android's dominance
Even as the token Apple?? and iOS?? fangirl around here, I couldn't turn a blind eye to how Android's been doing this year. It seemed that not a day could pass before there was yet another study, survey, or other data set that listed Google's mobile platform as being the No. 1 something-or-other or the top thingamajig-of-some-sort.

Don't believe it? Alright, let's run down a couple of highlights.

Android is the No. 1 smartphone platform in the U.S. (based on market share), comes out on top of worldwide sales statistics, rules?about 50 percent of the global smartphone market, dominates the southern part of the U.S., has the biggest chunk of the mobile app download market, has more daily Facebook users than iPhone, it's the most popular mobile platform for malware, and may have nicer users than iOS.??

Oh, and in case you wanted more statistics: Nowadays over 700,000 new Android devices are supposedly activated each day. We don't really know if that earns Android another No. 1 trophy as Apple hasn't released any official numbers for comparison.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg (L) jokes with comedian Andy Samberg during a keynote address at the Facebook f8 conference on Sept. 22, 2011 in San Francisco, Calif.

Facebook Timeline re-design (and Mark Zuckerberg's silly antics)
No end-of-the-year story round up would be complete without a mention of Facebook or its founder's antics. So let's hit on the big topics of the year?? aside from the usual privacy drama that always surrounds the social network.

In 2011 we were introduced to Timeline, a new Facebook profile design which naturally got us riled up. (Because we don't like change, darn it!) We didn't mind most of the new apps that were announced along with the redesign?though ? until we realized that the way they're integrated could lead to a lot of embarrassment?(and reveal our love of Justin Bieber songs).

Upset with Facebook's features and designs or not, we still aren't really managing to stay away from the social network. At least that's what a study suggested when it showed that we're all only about four degrees of separation apart on Facebook (rather than the six degrees assumed by the popular Kevin Bacon-themed game).

Facebook itself aside, many of us?? yours truly included?? were once again far more fascinated by the social network's founder than anything else. How could we not be when the man revealed that he is currently only eating animals which he kills and keeps?slipping us private photos thanks to technical glitches?

Apple

The release of the iPad 2
What? You think that one major Apple product release a year should be enough? Sorry, buddy?? but 2011 brought us the iPad 2 on top of the iPhone 4S.

The second generation tablet?? which was upgraded to iOS 5, the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system, months after its release?? is everything a shiny new toy should be: It's thinner, lighter, and more powerful than its predecessor.

We naturally waited in line for it, collected every detail we could while preparing for its release date, and hugged it tightly as soon as we picked it up. (Ok, maybe only I did that last part.)

All in all, we treated the release of the iPad 2 like any other major product release: With glee. But neither that behavior nor the actual iPad 2 itself were the big story this year. The gadget was such a darn big deal because it showed that the public finally grasped the notion of tablets, of life in a post-PC world.

The device topped holiday wish lists, was among the most searched terms on Google, earned the Consumer Reports seal of approval, sold out insanely quickly (and mostly to first-time iPad buyers), and kept selling despite constantly delayed shipping times. And if you prefer that in terms of hard statistics: Apple sold a whoppin' 11.12 million iPads during the fourth quarter of its fiscal year. (Yes, that's a lot??? an all-time record for iPad sales.) ?

Police shoot 7 'terrorists' in China's Muslim west (AP)

BEIJING ? Police in China's restive Central Asia border area fatally shot seven members of a Muslim ethnic group in what officials say was an attempt to end a kidnapping.

Officials and state media accounts said Thursday that police opened fire after encountering resistance in trying to free two men who had been kidnapped by what officials called "a violent terrorist group."

Four others were injured and another four arrested in Wednesday night's raid outside the city of Hotan. The two hostages were freed.

The area has been plagued by tensions between China's Han Chinese majority and ethnic Uighurs, the indigenous, mainly Muslim group. Some Uighurs have embraced militant separatism, though the Chinese government has provided scant evidence of organized terrorism.

Chile daily must pay readers for exploding churros (AP)

SANTIAGO, Chile ? Chile's Supreme Court has ordered a newspaper to pay $125,000 to 13 people who suffered burns while trying out a published recipe for churros, a popular Latin American snack of dough fried in hot oil.

The publisher of La Tercera must pay individual damages to 11 women and two men ranging from as little as $279 to $48,000 for one woman whose burns were particularly severe.

The high court's ruling was announced Monday, seven years after the readers burned themselves while trying out the recipe.

Judges determined that the newspaper failed to fully test it before publication, and that if readers followed the recipe exactly, the churros had a good chance of exploding once the oil reached the suggested temperature. Grupo Copesa, which publishes the paper, said it will abide by the ruling.

Days after the recipe was published in the paper's "Woman" magazine in 2004, hospitals around the country began treating women for burns suffered when the dough boiling in oil suddenly shot out of kitchen pots.

End college football bowl madness!

End college football bowl madness!

FILE - In this Oct. 8, 2011, file photo, Arkansas' receiver Greg Childs (85) runs down field after a reception as Auburn cornerback Chris Davis (11) pursues during the first quarter of an NCAA college football game in Fayetteville, Ark. Childs' senior season has gone anything but as planned. However, the Arkansas wide receiver hopes to end his career with one final big game when the Razorbacks play Kansas State in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 6. (AP Photo/April L. Brown, File)

(KMOV) -- When I was a teenager, New Years Day was bigger than Super Bowl Sunday, at least?for me. I still remember the excitement of watching the best college football teams play the biggest bowl games on that one day, virtually non-stop big time gridiron action from morning to late night. Heck, back then even the Gator Bowl was a big deal.

There won't be any college football bowl games on New Years Day this season. On January 2, you can watch Florida play Ohio State in the Gator Bowl.?Both teams have 6-6 records, which means one of them will wind up with a losing record. I realize those are two traditional powerhouse programs, but does anyone really believe they deserve to play in a bowl, much less that one?

Even more absurd is the lineup of bowl games on December 30 and 31. There are 8 teams with at least 6 losses playing in 9 bowl games on those days. UCLA, which plays in something called the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl on Christmas Eve, has a 6-7 record. It plays Illinois which has a 6-6 record. So, when that game is over the teams will have combined for 14 losses.

Last night, 7th ranked Boise State pounded Arizona State 56-24 in the MAACO Bowl. In the 4th quarter BSU lead by as much as 49-10. ASU finished the game with -11 yards rushing. It was clearly a mismatch. The loss gave Arizona State a 6-7 record for the season. But despite playing a game that shouldn't have been played, the conferences for those two teams will receive $1.1 million for their participation.

There are 35 bowl games this season. Overall, it's possible that as many as 9 of those teams could wind up with losing records.

I believe the current bowl system is corrupted by greed and a false sense of accomplishment. It should be an honor to play in a bowl. Now, in the case of many bowl games, it's just a series of meaningless contests that reward undeserving teams and create marketing opportunities for corporations. The postseason should be reserved for the best teams, not those with strong fan support, key demographics, and the potential to deliver big television ratings.

The major bowls used to be named Rose, Sugar, Orange, Cotton and Fiesta. Now, every bowl game has a major sponsor who often comes before the traditional name of the bowl, like the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. My personal favorite is the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsetta Bowl.?

Like President Obama, and perhaps you, I support a playoff system.?In my system, you would take at least the top 8 teams, based on a ranking system that includes losses, strength of schedule and other factors. The first round of games would be played 2 weeks after the end of the conference championship games. The 2 games in the second round would be played around Christmas. The national championship game would take place 2 weeks after that.

Clearly, this would create an uproar among the bowls, but?it would also give fans a much more exciting postseason, and crown an undisputed national champion. My 8 team playoff would cut bowl games from 35 to 15.

If you eliminate conference championship games, you could double the number of playoff teams to 16 by starting the postseason a week earlier. This would increase the number of playoff games to 23, and keep most of the current bowls as part of the playoffs. I actually prefer a 16 team playoff because it has the potential for more drama, and would provide a feel of "March Madness" in college football while still?making sure?that only the best teams?participate. Even with?16 teams,?every playoff "bowl game" would be?meaningful.

Frankly, I don't care that much if the playoff games are sponsored. I prefer to see the Gator Bowl without Taxslayer.com in front of it, but bowl sponsorships don't keep me awake at night. I think the most important games could still be played as "bowl games" like the Orange or Sugar. Perhaps, the earlier rounds could be hosted by smaller bowls like the Gator and the Sun.? The participating teams could be paid, but they would be paid more for each round of the playoffs. Of course, there's still room for bowl games that would not be part of the playoffs, though I doubt those games could be successful.

I don't claim to have all the answers, but?this bowl madness?needs to end.?

Russell Bishop: Give Yourself the Gift of Peace

Clearly, the world could use a bit more peace these days. How about you, personally? What are you doing to produce peace, yourself? Are you approaching your life in a state of peace, or are you agitating for peace?

The various Occupy movements remind me of my days in the '60s and '70s when I "fought" for peace. I was completely oblivious to the fact that as much as I wanted everyone else to be peaceful, I was at least as removed from the experience of peace as those I was agitating against.

It all came crashing home one day when I was hit by a tear gas canister and picked it up to throw it back. No one told me these things would be HOT. I suppose it was the shock of the searing heat, but I found myself temporarily outside my body, looking back at this angry, bearded young man screaming, "Why don't you (expletives) love us?" And, bam, I was back in my body, reeling with waves of awareness that my message was peace, love and caring while my strategy was to yell, scream and throw things.

Could you use a little more peace in your life?

Ever since those turbulent days, I have been learning the simple yet powerful reality that peace IS present, but I may not be present with the peace. If this sounds like double talk to you, then please allow me to offer you this remarkable gift of awareness that has been presented to me in numerous ways over these many years.

If you have ever found yourself "present with your own peace," you may have been simply sitting quietly by yourself, playing with your kids or even working happily way at your job when you noticed that you were "just fine." I suspect that if you were to be mindful and ask yourself what you needed to do in order to experience that peace, the answer would be "not so much." When you are experiencing peace, you're just present -- not focused on the past, judging what should have been different back then, and not focused on the future, fearful or demanding about what might be downstream. You're just present, right along with your inner place of peace that is always there, waiting for you to return.

If you are tracking with me, then an interesting question becomes "What happens when you leave your experience of peace?" Is it a function of something changing externally, or is it more a function of where you place your focus? The key is to notice where you go when you leave. As my teacher, John-Roger, noted one day: "If you're not at peace, guess who moved?" Peace didn't leave -- you left the peace.

Is your Self-Talk in the way?

In this Self-Talk to Soul-Talk series, which began earlier in October, we have been looking at the difference between the noisier, critical inner voice of your Self-Talk, and the softer, more patient one of your Soul-Talk. If ever there were an appropriate application of the difference between Self-Talk and Soul-Talk, it might be found in this question of how you produce your own experience of peace.

My most recent personal example of the difference came last week during a remarkable meditation retreat I attended called simply enough, Living in Grace. It might as well have been called Living in Peace. Over and over again during this simple yet profound week, I found myself recognizing a simple reality -- that peace is present inside of me whenever I choose to turn inward and notice. I also noticed how easily I can pull myself out of that profound peace simply by where I turn my focus.

Over the past year, massive personal changes have been happening in my life. Personal and family relationships shifted in unexpected ways, my client work all but disappeared for a time, and I found myself unclear about what directions my life was taking. Yet, I also noticed that some part of me was OK with all the changes taking place, a part that was at peace regardless of the apparent disturbances.

I must admit that it is hard to imagine being at peace with the level of disruption I was experiencing, and yet that was my experience -- at least part of the time. It was also easy to fall into a state of "How could this be happening to me?" thinking, something my Self-Talk was pretty good at doing having had decades of experience. Of course, the more I focused on "how unfair," the more removed I was from my peace. As is usually the case, my Soul-Talk had the answer.

Do you need a turning point? What would your soul do?

The Grace retreat helped me underscore a basic universal truth we have been examining these many months: The experience of life is less about what happens to you and more about how you respond. It is your soul that responds with grace and peace, but it is sometimes hard to hear its quiet voice in the midst of the noisy Self-Talk.

In one particular retreat process working with the experience of lack, it became blindingly obvious that what makes most any experience negative is a function of what I tell myself about the experience, more than the actual "facts." I can easily experience lack when I focus on what is not present. I recall many years ago that even when I was living in my car, I found myself doing "just fine" as long as I wasn't too focused on the past (why did my dad have to die so young and the family go bankrupt again) or overly concerned about the future (what if I lose my car?) Indeed, I was even at peace much of the time despite the circumstances. Sure, it was easy to compare myself to others and wallow in what I didn't have; however, whenever I was just present, I was "just fine."

The absence of peace can be experienced in any number of ways ranging from stress, anxiety and disturbance to upset, anger and hostility. Sure, there are all kinds of disruptive events in life, and yet some manage to walk through the disturbances relatively unperturbed, while others are much more agitated.

How would you like to walk through the next series of waves life has in store for you? What pulls you out of your peace? Is it something external that happens to you, or is it more a question of what you tell yourself about it? How do you restore yourself to your peace when you lose your way?

I'd love to hear from you. Please do leave a comment here or drop me an email at Russell (at) russellbishop.com.

[News] Nelly Sued For Credit Card Debt By American Express

AMEX says Nelly owes them over $20,000.

American Express has filed suit against rapper Nelly to recover a rather sizable credit card bill.

TMZ reports that the suit, which was filed in Missouri in October, claims that Nelly never paid his $20,403.64 credit card bill, and is also asking for another $3,000 in attorney's fees.

A court hearing is scheduled for January 9.

Earlier this year. Nelly expressed plans to release a new album in 2011, but it will now be hitting shelves in 2012.
