Wrapp Brings Social, Mobile Gifting Service To The U.S.; Partners With The Gap, H&M And Others

wrappWrapp, a social gifting service backed by Greylock Partners and Atomico, is crossing the pond with the U.S. launch of its mobile gift card and retail app. Wrapp, which was available previously only in the UK, Norway, Sweden and Japan, Wrapp is actually launching today with a number of U.S. retailers including Fab, Gap, H&M, Sephora, The Wall Street Journal, Wayfair, and others. As we've reported in the past, Wrapp was co-founded by Rebtel and SendIt founder Hjalmar Winbladh, Spotify founding CTO Andreas Ehn, and lets friends give, receive and redeem digital gift cards using mobile devices, and allows friends to contribute to gifts given by mutual friends. With Wrapp, which offers iPhone, Android and web apps, you sign in via your Facebook account, and you can then tap the Celebration tab on the app, browse your friends or major events, and select the person you want to send a gift card to. All available gift card offers for that friend are automatically listed.

Is this RIM's BlackBerry 10 development device?

Image

You know the drill -- grab yourself a spoonful of Morton's and get ready for another supposed leak of a gadget. This time around, you're looking at what's claimed as being one of Research In Motion's BlackBerry 10 "Development Alpha" devices that'll be handed out during next week's BlackBerry Jam -- just like the company promised a month ago. Images of the device first surfaced over at CrackBerry's forums and, as the site points out, the touchscreen candy bar seems to share its design DNA with the PlayBook. Keeping in mind that it's likely to remain a testing device for devs, don't bank on it ever hitting store shelves. That said, we're now curious how pivotal a role RIM's famous tactile keyboards will play on its next-generation phones -- if any. Head over to the source links below if you'd like to catch more photos from Mr. Blurrycam and extra information in the meantime.

?In the Studio,? MinoMonsters? Josh Buckley Chronicles His Quest to Constantly Create

Screen shot 2012-04-25 at 10.52.39 PM 1"In the Studio" marches on this week with yet another entrepreneur who on the surface seems too young to be a founder/CEO, until you peel back the layers and realize that he actually has a decade's worth of experience building web products, has built his own consulting services, has built sites that have been acquired for real sums of money, spent his nights in high school in a big city tech scene, invested his own earnings into startups (which mostly failed), and after immigrating to the U.S. to attend Y Combinator, is now leading a small team into the iPhone gaming market. I'll keep this post brief, mainly because I'd encourage everyone to really watch this video -- perhaps twice -- to really get a view into how an entrepreneur like Josh Buckley thinks. Buckley, who is currently 20 years old, began hacking on computers a decade ago, teaching himself basic programming languages, securing consulting gigs, and eventually going on to build products that were sold. At age 15, he made a larger sale, started traveling, and started investing in some of his friends ventures. Though he lost most of his invested money, he made one investment which gave him a view into Y Combinator.

Katie Holmes Reportedly Pregnant

Katie Holmes is reportedly pregnant again! The actress has faced these rumors before though so there is no telling for sure until a few months from now. Whenever a celebrity gains a pound, hides their belly in a mysterious way (as Katie does in the photo above), or sneezes wrong the press assumes they are knocked up. The cover of Star magazine is once again announcing that Katie is pregnant with child number two and of course, Tom is thrilled. Her reps are denying that the actress is indeed knocked up and judging from recent pictures, it doesn?t look like it to me. However sources insist, ?She?s struggling to contain the news. She can?t wait to be a mom again, and the sooner she can tell the world about it, the happier she?ll be.? Six-year-old Suri Cruise was overheard asking her mom, 33, during a New York City visit to Newsies on Broadway, ?if her baby sister was in Katie?s tummy!? ?Katie laughed and whispered something in Suri?s ear,? the source says. Do you think Katie told her to keep it a secret? Well, that perhaps makes it a bit more convincing, but I wont believe it until I see [...]

Yandex Q1 Earnings: Revenues Up 51% To $200.3M, Net Income Up 53% To $43M

yandexYandex, Russia's biggest search company, has posted Q1 earnings, with revenues up 51% to $200.3 million, and net income up 53% to $43 million. The results beat analyst expectations: on average analysts expected revenues of $194.64 million, with earnings per share of $0.15 (low $0.13; high $0.16), but other numbers may still give investors pause: Yandex's share of the search market in Russia, its largest market by far, is now at 59 percent against competition from Google and others: last year it was closer to 65 percent.

A Closer Look: Facebook?s Operating Margins Decline With Growing Headcount, International Growth

facebook_magnifyOne thing that has been remarkable about Facebook is its willingness to expand in developing markets that many other consumer Internet companies would otherwise write off because they're hard to monetize. But that growth abroad plus the company's increasing headcount and share-based compensation expenses are eating into its operating margins, according to yesterday's earnings numbers from a revised IPO filing. Facebook made $381 million in operating income (or 36 percent of its $1.06 billion in revenue) in the first quarter of this year. That's down from $388 million in operating income (or 53 percent of its $731 million in revenue) from a year ago. Net income is actually down 12 percent year-over-year to $205 million from $233 million a year ago. Here's a closer look at how revenues and costs are changing for the company:

ASUS Zenbook Primes with 1080p IPS panels and (probably) Ivy Bridge are real, coming to Taiwan in June

Refreshed ASUS Zenbooks with 1080p IPS panels and (probably) Ivy Bridge are real, coming to Taiwan in June

We've already seen spec sheets suggesting that ASUS's 11.6-inch and 13.3-inch Zenbooks are being fattened up for a major update, but now Engadget Chinese has glimpsed the new devices in their cold aluminum flesh. Tentatively called Zenbook Primes, or the UX21A and UX31A respectively, they both have 1920 x 1080 IPS panels with a matte finish and excellent viewing angles (please, ignore the dumb 1024 x 768 screen-saver in the pic, it doesn't do it justice). Judging from the fact that ASUS refused to let us go hands-on in case we identify the internals, we can be pretty confident that these beauties are running on next-gen ULV Ivy Bridge processors, which -- unlike their more powerful brethren -- have yet to be formally announced. We asked if there'd be room for discrete graphics, such as one of NVIDIA's new Kepler mobile GPUs for Ultrabooks, and were told that "anything is possible." Responses were equally vague when it came to global availability, because apparently the devices are awaiting clearance from Intel. All we know is that they should be out in Taiwan in June, likely with similar price tags to their predecessors.
